VAT Calculator: Add or Remove VAT from Any Price Online

Calculate Value Added Tax quickly and accurately with this free online VAT calculator.

What Is VAT and How Does It Work?

VAT stands for Value Added Tax. It is a consumption tax charged at each stage of the supply chain in many countries around the world, including the UK, EU countries, Australia, and most countries outside the US.

The end consumer bears the full VAT cost. Businesses along the supply chain collect VAT on their sales and claim back the VAT they paid on their purchases, so only the value added at each stage is effectively taxed.

How to Add VAT to a Price

Enter the base price (price before VAT) and the VAT rate. The calculator shows the VAT amount and the final price including VAT.

For example, a product priced at 100 pounds with 20% UK VAT would have a VAT of 20 pounds and a total price of 120 pounds.

How to Remove VAT from a Price

Enter the VAT-inclusive price and the VAT rate. The calculator extracts the base price and the VAT amount from the total.

The formula is: base price equals inclusive price divided by (1 plus the VAT rate as a decimal). For 20% VAT: 120 divided by 1.20 equals 100.

VAT Rates Around the World

VAT rates vary significantly by country. The UK standard rate is 20%. The EU average is around 20-25%. Australia's GST is 10%. India replaced its VAT system with GST in 2017.

This calculator works for any VAT rate you enter. Simply type the applicable rate for your country and transaction.

VAT vs GST: What Is the Difference?

GST (Goods and Services Tax) and VAT (Value Added Tax) are both consumption taxes but operate in different countries and sometimes with different rules. India uses GST; the UK and most EU countries use VAT.

The mathematical calculation is essentially the same: a percentage added to a base price. The key differences are in how tax credits are claimed and administered.
